Look into the lives around you and look into your own life to find the story.
Yesterday at the gym I was talking to someone who wants to write her brother’s story and as she started to tell me those words started to form into a shape. But there are so many gaps she said. So much of his life I never knew. She always thought he was an uncle and it was only later when he went away she learned who he really was.
I told her that for the parts you don’t know, you try to find out and for the parts you can’t find out, you use your imagination. We talked all about story shapes and arcs and creative non-fiction as we cycled.
Stories are all around us.
If you are meant to write you will find a way — if not you will find an excuse.
Here endeth the lesson for today.
